Sarah Jessica Parker's Bitten by Steve and Barry's
Sarah Jessica Parker recently announced that she was starting her own fashion line, which will be carried in Steve and Barry's stores. For those who don't know, Steve and Barry's is a massive store which carries ridiculously low priced clothing. How low? The first time I encountered them was at a grand opening in Oklahoma. Everything in the store was less than $7. I got jeans, kids clothes, a winter coat for my son, etc., and everything was less than $7. As far as the quality, $7 buys you clothing. Are you SERIOUSLY expecting good quality too? Sorry, but sweat shops don't pay enough to provide double stitching. I had luck with the kid's coat, a polo shirt I bought for my daughter, and the kid's jeans actually took longer to get a hole in the knee than any other pair we've ever tried. But the jeans I got for myself had a bad fit. I'll admit that I didn't try them on, but I know my measurements, and I bought the right size exactly. There's something weird about them though. Because I didn't try them on and it's only $7, I don't think I bought the right to be irritated about it.
Now, SJP's line is going to cost a little bit more than the standard fare at S&B's, but it's still going to be under $20. She said that fashion shouldn't be expensive. The problem is, if her collection is any indication, yes it should. I don't know how to say this except to be blunt. It's boring.

Take the first outfit, for example. White shorts- boring. Grey hoodie- so boring I wouldn't drop even $20. Blue shirt- Walmart boring.
Next outfit: Grey Dress- boring in a boring shade of boring grey. Purple shirt underneath- ugly and boring.
Third: slightly interesting, but nothing really new or innovative about it. I'd buy it, take it home, bleach the top half, and then dye it red. I'd pair it with a red patent leather belt and the tallest shoes I could find. Depending on my mood, my hair would be in a mohawk or a beehive. :D Then, and ONLY then, would this be interesting.

Fourth- eh. I could wear it to the beach and bury my nose in a book all day.
Fifth: Ditto.
Sixth: DITTO.
Do you see the problem here? Her high holiness of fashion, the great goddess Sarah Jessica Parker, her name be praised, has made the most boring choices possible. With this collection, everyone is expecting more Sex in the City. Heck, we'd settle for more sex OR city. With this collection, we might even be grateful for some "in the" too. Ha! There have been rumors that they are reworking the collection because the reviews haven't been favorable. The collection drops June 7th (July 7th according to some reports). It remains to be seen whether they use the phrase "drop" as in "a bomb".
